<a href="http://www.lonelyplanet.com/cuba/havana">Havana</a> is the economic, political, and cultural center of <a href="http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0107443.html">Cuba</a>.<br />
It&#8217;s been that way since the late 16th century when the city became Cuba&#8217;s capital.<br />
Rum, sugar, and cigars have left Havana&#8217;s harbor, arriving in ports all over the world, <strong>except</strong> those in the United States. That&#8217;s because of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_embargo_against_Cuba">US trade embargo against Cuba</a>. The embargo began in 1962.<br />
However, in 1951 when this map was printed, the US was heavily invested in Cuba and Havana was a prime vacation spot for Americans.<br />

The oldest section of the city is known for its narrow streets and colonial architecture.<br />
The modern section has wide boulevards, lavish buildings, and the <a href="http://havanajournal.com/images/gallery/Havana%20Cuba%20buildings/capitolio-habana.jpg">Capitol Building</a> is based on the <a href="http://z.about.com/d/dc/1/0/5/F/capitol.jpg">Capitol Building</a> in Washington DC.<br />
