If one defines something twenty years or older as ‘vintage,’ then The Simpsons now qualify! The half-hour show has been on the air for twenty years!
(Note: The Simpsons appeared as a series of one-minute vignettes during The Tracy Ullmann Show three years before given their own show).
Here’s an interesting cover story from December 1989. That’s one month before The Simpsons premiered in January 1990. This is a copy of the magazine Mother Jones.
The article raises the questions whether or not prime time is ready for Matt Groening‘s (Simpsons creator) subversive humor.
And that the Fox network was taking a chance airing The Simpsons because:
1) it was a cartoon and
2) Groening was regarded as an “alternative cartoonist, definately not mainstream.”
Well, twenty years later The Simpsons are not only mainstream, they’re an institution.
