Havana is the economic, political, and cultural center of Cuba.
It’s been that way since the late 16th century when the city became Cuba’s capital.
Rum, sugar, and cigars have left Havana’s harbor, arriving in ports all over the world, except those in the United States. That’s because of US trade embargo against Cuba. The embargo began in 1962.
However, in 1951 when this map was printed, the US was heavily invested in Cuba and Havana was a prime vacation spot for Americans.

The oldest section of the city is known for its narrow streets and colonial architecture.
The modern section has wide boulevards, lavish buildings, and the Capitol Building is based on the Capitol Building in Washington DC.
